For some reason, when I install an English version of Debian (7 or 8) on my ovh vps, I always have locales problems. To have a system using en_US.UTF-8, simply do the following : install debconf dpkg-reconfigure locales (as root) Choose en_US.UTF-8, press OK Choose en_US.UTF-8, press OK vim /etc/default/locale Add the correct LC_ALL. Ex: LC_ALL=”en_US.UTF-8″ reboot If these changes have not worked, you just have to add this line at the end of your .bashrc: export LC_ALL=en_US.utf8
